Passenger manifest for the SS Albert Ballin, September 27, 1923.

Albert Ballin was built by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg, and served on the Hamburg-New York City route. In 1928 a tourist class was added, and in 1929 a re-engining upped the speed to 19 knots. In 1934 she was lengthened by 50 feet, and speed again bumped, to 21.5 knots.

In 1935 the new Nazi government ordered the ship renamed to Hansa (Ballin having been Jewish). Hansa’s last Atlantic crossing was in 1939. In 1945, she was employed to evacuate Gdynia, but on 6 March hit a mine off Warnemünde and sank.

The wreck was raised and rebuilt by the Soviet Union around 1949, and renamed Sovietsky Sojus (or Sovetsky Sojus), becoming the largest passenger ship operating under the Soviet flag. From 1955 she operated between Vladivostok and points in the Far East. Renamed Soyuz in 1980, she sailed under that name for only a year before being scrapped.

She was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. She completed secondary school at Lawrence Academy at Groton, and received bachelor’s degrees from Brown University in political science and sociology.

Career

Bryant’s love of music led to her first television job in 1990, as an MTV VJ. She later hosted a live, daily music program on FX called Sound fX alongside Matt Ostrom and Orlando Jones. Jeff Probst replaced Jones toward the end of the show’s run.

Bryant was chosen by TNT to host a series of entertainment vignettes called Rough Cut. The success of the vignettes prompted TNT to turn Rough Cut into a weekly television series hosted and written by Bryant. This marked the beginning of Bryant’s professional relationship with Turner Broadcasting. TBS soon launched the wraparound series Movies, For Guys Who Like Movies, allowing Bryant to drive a U.S. Naval LCAC hovercraft, train with Marine snipers and engage in other action packed activities. Lorne Michaels later picked Bryant to host his new daily VH1 game show, Name That Video in 2001; Bryant filmed 50 episodes.

After a brief stint hosting CNN’s Talk Back Live, Bryant was chosen to co-anchor CNN’s revamped Showbiz Tonight in 2004. When the series premiered in early 2005, Bryant was the only African American woman anchoring in primetime on any cable news channel.

Bryant, a Patriots and Red Sox fan, joined ESPN for their first live New Years Eve show as the countdown to 2006 began. That year, Bryant joined the Showtime Championship Boxing announcer team with Steve Albert, Al Bernstein and Jim Gray. Derrick (Rick) Allen Mahorn (born September 21, 1958 in Hartford, Connecticut) is a former NBA basketball player who, at 6′10, played power forward and center, most notably for the Detroit Pistons. Mahorn played college ball at Hampton University.

As dubbed by Piston announcer George Blaha, Mahorn was the “Baddest Bad Boy of them all.” Somewhat short for a center, Mahorn had a huge rear-end that he wasn’t afraid to plow people over with. He represented the Bad Boys perfectly with his antics both on the court and off with his infamous media handlings earning a reputation as one of the NBA’s notorious figures.

After being picked up by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1989 Expansion Draft, Pistons general manager Jack McCloskey tried in vain to trade to get him back. The Wolves wouldn’t have it, and Detroit lost one of its most beloved sports figures. However, Mahorn didn’t play for Minnesota, choosing instead to continue his career in the Italian league for the 1991-92 season, eventually finding his way to the Philadelphia 76ers and teaming with superstar Charles Barkley to form the top-rebounding duo of “Thump N’ Bump.”

Mahorn later played for the New Jersey Nets four seasons, before returning to the Pistons in 1996-97. He retired after the 1999 season, as a Philadelphia 76er.

Currently, Mahorn serves as a color commentator for Detroit Pistons radio broadcasts, and as an assistant coach under former teammate Bill Laimbeer with the WNBA’s Detroit Shock. Together with wife Donyale, he has six children.

On July 22, 2008, at a Sparks-Shock game, Mahorn attempted to break up a brawl. When attempting to restrain Lisa Leslie, he put his left hand out and Leslie fell to the ground. He was described as being a “peacemaker” but who escalated the situation when he pushed Leslie. Mahorn was suspended for two games.

Times Media, Inc. produces eight community newspapers in San Jose, California. The chain’s first newspaper, Evergreen Times, was founded in 1982. In addition to print form, the newspapers can be downloaded in PDF format. Circulation exceeds 135,000.

The newspapers are independently owned and operated community newspapers in the Bay Area. The principal distribution areas encompass the cities of San Jose and Campbell, CA. Newspaper banners include: Almaden Times Weekly, Evergreen Times, Blossom Valley Times, Cambrian Times, Campbell Times, Coyote Valley Times, Willow Glen Times, and Santa Teresa Times.

The Almaden Times Weekly scooped the daily press on a number of major stories, including the story about an 11-year-old girl who was the first victim of an outbreak of mycobacterial furunculosis. The infection was caused from an allegedly improperly disinfected whirlpool Pedi spa. Two weeks later, the newspaper uncovered an outbreak among 11 women who received pedicures at three south bay nail salons. Within a few weeks, the number of cases rose to nearly 60, with 13 salons implicated locally. The outbreak eventually becomes a national health story.
